What is the sportsmanship rating policy?

Respect for the dignity, rights, and personal safety of the individual is expected from all members of the campus community.”

Any unsportsmanlike conduct including, but not limited to, arguments with officials (the captain is the only player permitted to talk with the officials) by any coach, manager or spectator, flagrant fouling, fighting, etc. will result in expulsion of that individual and/or team from further participation in that scheduled game. Officials/supervisors have the authority to impose penalties for teams behaving in an unsportsmanlike manner. You are required to have good sportsmanship before, during, and after the game is played.

Your team will be earning their sportsmanship rating before, during, and after each game. If a team’s cumulative sportsmanship rating for their regular season games is below a 2.0 they will lose their privilege to participate in the playoffs. In addition to having good sportsmanship in the regular season, your team must continue to exhibit good sportsmanship throughout the playoffs. If your team earns a rating below a 2.0 during the playoffs, your team will be removed from the playoffs.

Sportsmanship Scale

0- Player was ejected, fighting, team members under influence of alcohol, intentional damage to equipment or facility, profanity/threats towards another, incident is documented, etc.

1- “trash talk” – Officials have to stop the game to address behavior. Spectators using abusive language, after one warning.

1.25- Players arguing with other players, Excessive complaining to officials, yellow card(s), technical fouls, warnings, etc.

1.5- Still Complaining with officials, no effort made to agree with calls, dangerous play, lack of concern for safety of others. Teams that forfeit a game with no 24 hour notice will receive this rating.

1.75- Complaining more often/evident, very little to no effort to cooperate with officials, Captain is not addressing his/her team when asked to do so

2- Standard rating-Neutral rating. Not great, not bad. Captain demonstrates some ability to convey sportsmanship to his/her team, some verbal disagreement with IM Staff and some tension between teams. Teams that alert the IM Office 24 hours in advance of a scheduled game that they will miss will receive this rating.

2.25 -Players make safe/respectful effort in games, minimal arguing with officials, some tension between 2 people on opposing teams.

2.5-Respectful towards other players and officials, some tension here and there but when asked to calm down, respectful and understanding

2.75- Clean fun game between players, no tension at all between officials/players

3- Above and beyond expectations, enthusiastic, respectful before, during, and after game, early arrival to playing area, assist with clean up, etc.

What benefit is there to indicating that we are willing to accept free agents?

Not only do you provide the opportunity for individual students to have a team to play with, you also will receive an automatic 3.0 sportsmanship rating for your first game unless your sportsmanship for the first game would be below a 2.0.

Having additional players will also make it easier to ensure that your team does not forfeit any games.

What's a captain's meeting?

Captain's Meetings will take place before each season starts. This is a chance for our staff to relay any important information to all of the teams about the rules of the sport, rules of our program in general, and answer any questions your teams may have. Anybody from the team may be a representative at these captain's meetings, it does not necessarily have to be the captain.

If your team fails to send a representative to the meeting, then your team will be penalized. The penalty will be an automatic "0" sportsmanship rating for your first game, which can significantly impact your chances of making it into playoffs.

Why did I get a sportsmanship rating penalty in my first game?

If your team missed the captain's meeting, which includes showing up late, your team will incur a penalty to a 1.5 sportsmanship rating for your first game of the season.

If your team competes with a poor sportsmanship that warrants a rating below 1.5, then you will receive whichever amount is lower. For example, if your team missed the captains meeting but then a player of yours was ejected from the game, you will receive a 0 sportsmanship rating rather than a 1.5.

What's the difference between cancelling a game and forfeiting a game?

Cancelling a game is when the captain indicates to the Graduate Assistant for Recreation Programs at least 24 hours in advance that they cannot field enough players for the game. This must be written out in e-mail form to recprograms@rider.edu. If a game is cancelled, the opposing team will still receive a win, but the team that is cancelling will not have a forfeit held against them. Both teams will be awarded a "2" sportsmanship rating.

A forfeited game essentially means that you failed to provide notice of not being able to play a game at least 24 hours in advance. If a team forfeits a game, the opposing team receives a win and receives a "2" sportsmanship rating, with the forfeiting team receiving a "1.5". If a team forfeits two games in a season, they then forfeit the rest of the games in the season and are not eligible for the playoffs.

Again, you must e-mail the Graduate Assistant for Recreation Programs at least 24 hours in advance if you want to cancel a game. Asking to change a game time does not constitute as a game cancellation.

"Can we move the game back/forward by ___ minutes?"

Unfortunately, we usually are not able to change the game times from what they are currently set at. The Student Recreation Center Courts are usually used for other means all throughout the day, such as club sports, group exercise classes, and even varsity sports.

The SRC also closes at a certain time each night, and we have to finish our games for the night at an appropriate time to let our staff break down the equipment so the SRC staff can properly close the SRC.

Why is the roster locked? Can I add more players during the playoffs?

After two weeks of play, the rosters will be locked from adding more players to the team. Up until this point, teams are allowed to add players as they see fit. However, once the rosters are locked, teams are no longer allowed to add any additional players. The reason we initiate roster locks is that we want to maintain integrity and fairness throughout the entire season.

You cannot add more players during the playoffs either. Again, this is to ensure that the teams are the same as they were throughout the season.

I got suspended, what happens now?

If you were suspended, you are immediately ineligible from further competition in any intramural events or activities until you have met with the Recreation Programs Coordinator or Director. It is the responsibility of the ejected participant or spectator to schedule this meeting to discuss the events that occurred and his or her subsequent eligibility to participate.

The minimum suspension for any ejection will be one game. Additional game may be added to a suspension depending on the severity of the incident and/or subsequent offenses.

Note: any resulting suspensions from play will not begin until the meeting has taken place.
