Where do I sign up a team/individual for an Intramural sport?

We are using an internet based program, IMLeagues. This program allows you to register for any Intramural activity/sport, invite your team members to join your team, review results and league standings, print playoff brackets, and communicate via email and text messages from your home, campus computer lab, nearest coffee shop etc. Just click on www.imleagues.com/niu to get started.

How do I sign up a team/individual for a sport?

 

  1. Go to  www.IMLeagues.com/schools/niu/Registration OR Go to www.IMLeagues.com.
  2. Either enter your NIU email or, under the school dropdown select "Northern Illinois University." You will then be directed to our IMLeagues SSO.
  3. Click on the IMLeagues logo and you will be directed back to the IMLeagues website.
  4. You will now have access to your IMLeagues account and will be able to see the sports we are currently offering.
  5. You will then click on the sport you're interested in and create a team.
  6. Disclaimer: Teams must pay on myrec.niu.edu in order to play.

How much does it cost?

 

  1. Cost varies for each sport/activity. To view all sports with their prices please consult the Intramural website. Individual sports will cost less than team sports.

How do I form a team?

 

  1. People usually form teams with their friends or people they live with. After you have created your team through IMLeagues, as the captain you have the privilege to invite people on your roster and people can ask to join your roster. Make sure you and your team members bring your current NIU OneCard to play in all Intramural Sports games and activities. Players who do not have a current NIU OneCard for each game or activity will NOT be allowed to play.

What sports do you offer?

 

  1. Intramural Sports offers a wide variety of sports and activities to meet different interests. Major team sports include Softball, Indoor Soccer, Flag Football, Basketball, Floor Hockey, and Volleyball. Other sports includes Sand Volleyball, Badminton, and Table Tennis. If you have any suggestions for sports we should offer in the future, please email intramurals@niu.edu. 
  2. Please check out the NIU Intramural website for current offerings, registration dates and fees. These can also be seen on IMLeagues.

How many people can I have on my team?

 

  1. Each sport has different roster limitations. When creating your team, please look at the team settings and you'll be able to see how many players are allowed on a roster. For example, Sand Volleyball teams can have a maximum of 8 players on a roster and Basketball can have a maximum of 12 players on a roster. In order to play, players must be on the roster and must have completed the sport quiz in order to play.

Where are the games played?

 

  1. Venues vary based on the sport and season. Intramural Sports uses the Student Recreation Center, the Outdoor Recreation Sports Complex, the New Hall Sand Volleyball Court, and the Yordan Center/Chessick Practice Facility.

  2. Most outdoor sports will be held at the ORSC.

  3. Most indoor sports will be held inside the Student Recreation Center.

  4. Please consult the league descriptions to find out what location your sport is being held at.

What times are games scheduled?

 

  1. Game times vary on facility schedules and amount of teams registered.

  2. Some sports will have leagues where you'll register for a certain time slot. For example, Monday/Wednesday 7pm.

  3. For tournaments, teams must be available to play at all times listed as there is no guarantee you would play at the same time, given your team advances.

  4. Please look at league descriptions to see game times. 

  5. During playoffs, teams are not guaranteed to play on the same days and times that they play during the regular season. So, look at bracket progressions to see when your team will play next.

What is in it for the champions?

 

  1. After the regular season, teams will be seeded and placed in a playoff bracket. Depending on number of teams, there may be multiple brackets such as an A, B, and C OR Playoff Brackets will be split into their own separate leagues such as Open A, Greek A, Men's A, etc.

  2. In the playoffs, teams will be competing for a coveted Intramural Championship shirt. Winnings teams and players will receive shirts for winning their given league.

  3. Winning teams and players will also have their picutre taken in their championship shirts. These pictures will then be posted on Social Media and around the Student Recreation Center.

Where can I find the standings for my league?

 

  1. Standings, records, and statistics will all be generated and entered on IMLeagues.

  2. To see the standings for your given sport, go to your league page on IMLeagues, and on the top of the page you'll see a navigation bar with "Standings" as one of the choices.

  3. After each Intramural night, the IM staff will input scores and the standings will update as scores are put in.

Where can I find Intramural rules and the Intramural handbook?

 

  1. The Intramural Sports Participant Handbook and individual sport rules can be found on the Intramural Website. Scroll to the bottom and click on "Sport Rules" and the links will come up for each active sport and the IM Participant Handbook.

  2. These resources may also be found on IMLeagues. Rulebooks can be found in the sport descriptions or on the left side of the NIU Intramural Home Page on IMLeagues. It's labled "Handbooks and Manuals."

What kind of time commitment does Intramural Sports require? Are there practices?

 

  1. Intramural Sports are less of a time commitment than Club Sports. Teams and players sign up for a time and day that best suits their schedule. Teams will either play one or two games a night, at most one hour each game night.   

  2. There are no scheduled practices, you just show and play. Teams and players are more than welcome to practice on their own. The Student Recreation Center has Open Rec times throughout the day where students can play basketball, tennis, volleyball, badminton, or even set up a pickleball court.

Can I play Intramural sports if I am a varsity athlete?

 

  1. Yes you can, although there are some restrictions!

  2. Varsity athletes may not play in their parallel sport while they are on the varsity team. For example, Varsity Football players cannot play Flag Football, Varsity Basketball players cannot play 3v3 or 5v5 Basketball, and Varsity Soccer players cannot play Indoor or Outdoor Soccer.

  3. If a varsity athlete wishes to play in their parallel sport, they must sit out one full academic year starting from the end of their last varsity season. For example, a Varsity Soccer player must sit out one full academic year, from the end of their final varsity season, in order to play Indoor or Outdoor Soccer. So, if they played Varsity Soccer during the 2019-20 season, they must wait until 2021-22 in order to play Indoor or Outdoor Soccer.

  4. Varsity athletes can participate in any non-parallel sport, as long as their coaches allow them to. For example, a Varsity Basketball player can sign up for Badminton or a Varsity Baseball player can sign up for Flag Football.

  1. No, professional athletes are ineligible for Intramural Sports.

What happens if I get injured during an Intramural contest?

 

  1. All of our Intramural Supervisors are certified in CPR/AED and First Aid.  They are first responders in all emergency situations and are trained to handle all situations that may occur in regards to injuries.  Keep in mind though that you play at your own risk, and NIU Recreation is not liable for any injuries.

  2. If you do get injured, please do not leave the facility until the on-site supervisor has filled out an Incident/Accident Report.

How many games does my team need to win to make the playoffs?
 
  1. Depending on league/sport size and facility availability, teams must win 1 regular season game, maintain a 3.0 sportsmanship average, and meet forfeit policy standards. 
  2. For certain sports, all teams will make playoffs however it is never guaranteed.

How do I know when I play my games for playoffs?

 

  1. After the completion of league games, tournament brackets will be posted on IMLeagues.

  2. Along with that, an email will be sent out via IMLeagues to all participants within that given sport. Within that email, there will be details and information regarding qualification, format, game times, etc. 

  3. Team captains are expected to find out when their team plays and relay that information to the rest of their team. Please look at bracket progressions, so you know when your team plays next, if you win.

What are Extramurals?

 

  1. Extramural events are tournaments hosted by other universities for Intramural teams to compete against other universities and colleges at the state, regional, and national level.  Most of these tournaments are played as part of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) National Campus Championship Series (NCCS).

How do I join the staff?

 

  1. Applications will be made available on Huskies Get Hired during February and March of the Spring Semester. Interviews will then commence in April.

  2. Students may also email intramurals@niu.edu stating their interest and or attach their Resume and Cover Letter.
